A Picture Tribute To Socks

July 2, 2007

SockBear

I took pictures of this sock bear at different stages of it’s creation and put together a picture tutorial of sorts. You can find it in my portfolio section.

2007_06_30_1Materials

These are some of the things I use to create sock creatures. It’s pretty much just socks, upholstery thread, and stuffing.

2007_06_30_2BuildingShapes

To start, I use an old sweat sock to build a shape. I might sew several shapes together to achieve the overall form that I want. This is rough, quick work because it will all be covered up later. I then take another sock and begin “skinning” color onto the shape, (as I have done with the black sock in the second picture).

2007_06_30_3Mouth

I want this to be a roaring sock bear, so I create the top and bottom parts of the mouth first.

2007_06_30_4Attached

The black sock I sewed onto my shape earlier will be the area that I sew the mouth onto.

2007_06_30_5FinishedMouth

I add sides to the mouth and a bit more bulk to the bottom lip and chin.

2007_06_30_6Body

Now I build another shape and add it to the bottom for a… well… bottom.

2007_07_01_7Skinning

Now it’s time to “skin” the bear. I will use the inside of these brown socks because they have such great texture.

2007_07_01_8EyesAndEars

I add the ears, sew on some buttons for eyes, and add a heavy brow for personality.

2007_07_01_9LegsAndTail

All that is missing from this roaring bear is the legs and tail, so I make those.

2007_07_01_010FinalAssembly

I sew on the legs and tail and the bear is complete.

2007_07_01_011Finished

A finished, scary, roaring, mutant sock bear.

Don Jones

This bear puts my stuffed bear to shame. Fantastic! Great tutorial too… If you would modify one of these creations into a golf club head cover I would buy one… that is if it was under $100 bucks.

Doug Jones

Great tutorial! Now that I see how it is done, I will be making one of these reall soon. Like maybe in 2008. So, when are you off to foreign countries to buy those cool European socks?

Don Jones

Have you got the Brother Jones 2007 Preachin’ Tour t-shirts printed up?

Doug Jones

maybe he has already left…

Nick Jones Everybody

Seriously. That is the coolest thing ever. I think you should just make sock bears for a living.

Dennis Jones

…if I could quit everything else I do today and just sit in front of the TV sewing mutant sock creatures together, I’d be a happy man… and play hockey… if I could just sew mutant sock creatures together and play hockey I would be a happy man… did I mention I SCORED A GOAL IN LAST FRIDAY NIGHTS HOCKEY GAME!!! …I didn’t? …I scored a goal in last friday nights hockey game… it was all very exciting… I would love to tell you more about it, but I must get to work now because unfortunately I can’t quit everything else I have to do today…

Doug Jones

I guess we will never know when the big overseas sock buying trip is…

Dennis Jones

…oh… sorry… the end of this month sometime… I’m still on a “need to know” basis for this and all other important information…

Don Jones

Hey Nick Jones Everybody, Has your recent move of homesteads impacted your golf playing frequency?

Doug Jones

I suggest white socks for the preaching gig. (I thought you “needed to know” this)

Don Jones

and whitey tighties.

Face Off

July 9, 2007

HockeyStick1HockeyStick2

I skated out to take the face off in last friday nights hockey game and as I was waiting for the referee to drop the puck I noticed something scribbled on the blade of my hockey stick. With closer observation, it became pretty obvious that my youngest son, Pete, had punked me again.

The Comments

Roballoo

I like the Cathy (nonexistant) Nose.

Dennis Jones

…I think this might become my new personal logo…

Doug Jones

I’m thinking this drawing struck FEAR in the hearts of the other team. As they shrank back in fear and trembling, I hope you got to score a goal or two…

Dennis Jones

…I think you may be right because I got one goal and two assists in the game… maybe I need to outline that little picture with a black Sharpie so the other team can see it better…

Don Jones

Peter has a future as a caricaturist artist. Forget that accounting stuff…

Doug Jones

…but SOMEbody needs to count them beans…

The Official Hockey Game Report !!!

(1) …this game started at 10:30, (which is kinda late), so no one bothered to show up for our team… we had our goalie, one starting line, and one sub… a Quizno’s I believe…

(2) …one of our players took a 5 minute major penalty within the first 3 minutes of the game, kinda went crazy, the refs tacked two more penalties on top of that one and threw him out of the game… this left us with no subs and 9 penalty minutes to kill…

(3) …a hockey shift usually lasts for a minute or two, but our team had to play the entire game with no rest…

(4) …I got really tired…

(5) …during the second period, I was thinking a lot about the delicious Orange Freeze I would be having at Steak And Shake after the game…

(6) …we managed to score 5 goals during the game, but couldn’t quite overcome all the goals the other team scored on us during the monster penalty kill…

(7) …I got a boo boo on my knee…

(8) …my hockey pants are so old the snap rusted and broke off during the game and it scratched my tummy…

(9) …the referees seem to know me by name… I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing…

(10) …any game I can walk away from in one piece is a good game… this was a pretty good game…

Don Jones

Sounds like this hockey game was one for the ages. Is that how that cliche is used? Or is it, one for the books? Especially liked the “thinking about the delicious Orange Freeze after the game…” Priceless.

Doug Jones

are you crazy?! At 10:30 you should be at Steak n Shake drinking the delicious Orange Freeze and laughing at the guys who went to play hockey… at least that’s what I would do…

Don Jones

And by all means… order a side of fries with that Freeze.

Ma.

MMmmm where do you find the time?

Simple Computer Color

July 12, 2007

1lippy2

I’ve been piddling around on the computer lately trying to come up with a quick way to lay simple color into a pencil sketch. Most of these efforts end with me threatening to throw my computer out the window if it doesn’t start doing what I want it to, but I kinda liked the direction this one was headed in… sorta.

The Comments

Doug Jones

I like the background gradient. I never think to do that. Is that with the gradient tool or what?

Dennis Jones

…yup… the only computer painting things that really ever work for me are the things I can’t glop up… like a gradient tool…

Roballoo

Hey not a bad use of color. I like the slightly uneven teeth. The sketch kinda reminds me a bit of Edward Sorel.

Simple Computer Color Day 2

July 13, 2007

1girlcolored

This morning before I got busy with work, I tried doing simple computer color on a pencil sketch once again. This one got me a bit closer to where I am hoping to go… I think. I don’t really want an airbrushed look like this one has, but hopefully, one of these days I’ll find that magical Photoshop brush I’m searching for. My ultimate goal is to be able to scan pencil drawings from my sketchbook into the computer and slam color onto them real fast.

The Comments

Don Jones

Just remember this Dennis … speed kills. Keep that quache under the local speed limit.

Tomato Time

July 17, 2007

Salsa

How do you get a tortilla chip to dance? Put on a little salsa.

We have a garden full of green tomatoes that are just about ready to turn red, so everyone around here is excited because we know it’s only a matter of days until Karen’s homemade salsa makes it’s summer appearance. There’s really nothing like it. It is so good, I eventually just forget about all that chip dipping nonsense and start drinking it straight out of the bowl.

The Comments

Doug Jones

That is one festive ChEEp! I haven’t had a real tomato yet this summer. Dang.

Dennis Jones

…isn’t it great when we get the “jokes page” jobs and we have a picture and a joke ready for any emergency Brother Jones posting that needs to be made…

Doug Jones

ah, yes…. a little spot art in the freezer is mighty nice!

Dennis Jones

…well …I guess I’m in trouble today… apparently I left my cell phone in the pocket of my jeans and Karen just fished it out of the bottom of the washing machine …it doesn’t seem to be working so much now… you would think getting it all cleaned up with a good, hard washing would help, but apparently not…

Don Jones

Nothing that cash won’t fix.

Doug Jones

I prefer to wash my cell phone the old fashioned way. I take it down to the river and beat it against rocks… hey, wait… I don’t HAVE a cell phone…

Dennis Jones

…cell phones? CELL PHONES?? …we don’t need no stinkin’ CELL PHONES…

Don Jones

I use to have a cell phone… those years I spent “up the river” in the “big house”.

Dennis Jones

…didn’t you have to share it with the other convicts during yard time?

Summer Pilgrimage

July 18, 2007

itunes1itunes2

I began a pilgrimage this last April. It is musical pilgrimage. It is my quest to listen to all 3500 songs in my I-tunes library before the end of the summer and throw as many songs away as possible. How did I end up with 3500 songs in my I-tunes library? I have absolutely no idea. I’ve never even heard of some of these songs. When I discovered there were 168 songs that start with the letter “a” alone, I realized I had a gigantic task ahead of me. I am currently at the letter “i” and the summer is rapidly coming to a close, but my crusade continues to march forward.

The Comments

N.H.

Another post, wow. I don’t have an ipod. I still use casettes. I like the old school still.

Doug Jones

I’m not positive on this, but I think that “Hard Days Night” you have may be a cheap copy… I’d say dump it.

Dennis Jones

HEy… that is a classic version of that song! I think I even have it loaded into my Nano…

Don Jones

Carry on my wayward son There’ll be peace when you are done Lay your weary head to rest You’re at the “i”s no mo….

Roballoo

Hey you’ve got some Paolo Conte! He’s way cool ~ And thats an even way cooler song.

Dennis Jones

…Happy Feet by Paolo Conte always makes me feel good… of course, so does Happy Feet by Kermit The Frog…

Roballoo

Does kermie sing his song in Italian too?

Doug Jones

give us something GOOD to look at for the next 2 weeks…

Dennis Jones

…hope you guys enjoy tomorrows post…

…day… after day… after day… after day…

Doug Jones

I’m already tired of it… hey… fake an illness and just stay home and make cool sock creatures…

Don Jones

Don’t they have FREE Wi-Fi in Romania’s StarBucks? I’d like you to post your swanky sermon notes for review and analysis.

Dennis Jones

…I’m pretty sure I’m going to be able to weasel out of that obligation because I don’t think anyone remembers that thing but you two… if not… well.. uhm… yikes…

Don Jones

IF pressed into preaching. just give ‘em the 10 Commandments. That will get ‘em upright in the pews.

Doug Jones

I think you should prepare a sermon based on Judges 1:6. It would be a very memorable talk. Maybe illustrate it with some drawings.

Hoisting The Cup… Again!

July 24, 2007

HockeyChampions

After winning the league hockey championship last summer I decided to go out on a high note and quit playing. I’m too old to be competing against twenty year olds. Then my youngest son, Pete, came home from college for the summer and we both signed up to play together on a “house” hockey team.

No one expects much from the “house” hockey team because it’s basically made up of miscellaneous odds and ends of players that couldn’t hook onto real teams. Of course, this team now had Pete and the “Big Weeze” on it.

The league tournament was last friday night and, low and behold, our little “house” team made it all the way to the championship game. Pete scored the first goal of the game, but then the opposing team took a three goal lead. Our shoulders drooped as we resigned ourselves to certain defeat, but not Pete. He went out and immediately scored a goal, and then another, and all of a sudden we were only down by one with a lot of game left. We took the lead and won the game.

The Big Weeze… a hockey champion for the second year in a row! …HooHOO!

The Comments

SWANKY!!!!

Doug Jones

🙂  They always say the odds are in favor of the house. They must be right. Have a great trip!

Dennis Jones

🙂

Don Jones

Den, you might need to check the levels of bilirubin in your blood… Your skin tone appears quite yellow and I don’t think it’s my monitor. Have Dr. Karen run some tests.

Dennis Jones

…oh, I’m just a little winded in this picture… those trophies are pretty heavy when you try to hold them over your head…

Doug Jones

Is that VP Cheney behind you? Hope he didn’t bring his shotgun to the game…

Don Jones

I can tell Peter is really proud of his Pops. On second thought, maybe he’s just looking forward to the post game Orange Freeze deal.

Dennis Jones

…funny you should bring up the orange freeze, Don… here are the actual emails Pete and I sent back and forth to each other the day of the game…

Pete Jones…
T-5 hours till takeoff…. I’m going to play as hard as I can tonight, I might give it all in the first game

Dennis Jones…
I usually give it my all on the very first shift and then I have nothing left for the rest of the game…

Pete Jones…
The first shift?!?!?!? I didnt know you could last that long…. I thought it was more like the first stumble up the rink where you exert more speed than the Flash and transfer all your energy into me when you can’t stop and nearly send me to the ground like last week…. guess I underestimate you Queeson Big Weeze…. the first shift (if you are on our team) could last anywhere from a third to an entire period, we’ll see how you hold up…. don’t send me any pansy passes man!!! just watch, you’ll probably rocket them past me now and make me waste all my energy skating for a puck that will be snatched from me at the last second…. if you and I break out (like last week where I passed it off to you at the last minute and you squeeked) I suggest you screen the goalie and I put it between your legs… -weezehopper

Dennis Jones…
…ok, let’s get on the same page for tonight’s game …if I wink at you, that means a pass is coming your way… or something is in my eye… if I start waving my hand wildly in the air it means I’m open… or a bug is flying around my head and I’m trying to shoo it away…

Pete Jones…
Sounds good, if I say anything to you, it means Im mad…. if I pass you the puck, it means I’ve given up on trying to win….

Dennis Jones…
…I think that’s a pretty good game plan on your part…

Pete Jones…
You’re kind of like a Rudy….. hahahahahahah…. just kidding… goals don’t score themselves, you are a good player pops, you know Im always just giving you a hard time…. hopefully we will have some good highlights tonight…. either way, at least there is a strawberry shake awaiting me……

Dennis Jones…
…the post game orange freeze is always the highlight of the game for me!

Kiwi1Kiwi2

I think I’m going to head in a different direction with my little sock creations… go for something more stylized and less identifiable… like Mr. KiwiMon here.

The Comments

Doug Jones

my dental hygienist would love this one…

Don Jones

Makes me smile… Can I get this as a headcover for my Bang-O-Matic driver?

Don Jones

Is Dennis out of the country yet? If he is, we can start trashing his little blogs…

Doug Jones

He is outta here! BUT he has some time release posts! This is the first one….

Don Jones

What? Time released? I thought that only came in over the counter medications.

Roballoo

I like it! It’s creepy and cute at the same time.

Doug Jones

creepy cute… that’s what we strive for at BrotherJones.

Roballoo

Which brother is the creepy one and which is he cute one? Where does that leave the third one?

Don Jones

Creepy, cute and cruddy. You be the judge.

What island do cats come from? Meowi.

I posted this sketch a while back. Here is what the finished piece looks like.

The Comments

Don Jones

That is the cat’s meow. What’s going on in Romania this time of year?

Doug Jones

I betcha the internets don’t reach to Romania.

Roballoo

Nice how you captured the expression on his face in the sketch and carried it though to the final piece. The subtleties such as the surfer’s goatee and the difference in the reflections for each sunglass lense.
