Cameo Appearance

January 2, 2008

Barber

I recently did this little spot illustration for a joke page. The gag was that Santa doesn’t like “knotty” hair. Somehow our dad (who was a barber) magically appeared in the picture. Come to think of it, Dad probably wasn’t a real big fan of knotty hair either.

The Comments

Doug Jones

Does Santa have nappy haired Ho Ho Hos?

Don Jones

As I study this illustration and let my mind wander, I find myself in Dad’s third-from-the-window chair in the original Cameo barbershop.

Jason Bourne

That is bad news if Santa ever gave a kid that kind of look….

Digital Sketchbook

January 3, 2008

NintendoDS

I grabbed my last little bit of Christmas cash, ran out of the house and bought myself a NintendoDS. Did an all consuming passion to play video games suddenly overtake me, you ask? Nay! (howd that horse get in here?) In fact, I don’t even own a Nintendo game to play on this thing. I downloaded a home-brewed piece of software off the internet some guy came up with called Colors, installed it onto my Nintendo, and I now have a Digital Color Sketch Book! I am now officially a Plein Air Digital Painter! I actually saw that blue cat out in the plein air… I think… that’s the way I remember it anyway…

If you want to read more about my Nintendo adventures or that Colors program, you can find those things HERE.

The Comments

Don Jones

My mouth is standing open … this is great. You can draw AND play games. Obviously Santa knows you’re the only Jones brother that has been good this past year. Doug got a crummy little tree. I got a pencil and piece of paper. I enjoyed the read of the Nintendo DS adventure over on Nick’s place. I’d link that up, but I don’t know how.

Dennis Jones

…Keegan had a pretty funny comment over there…

Don Jones

What’s the process to get these pictures into your computer? A USB hook-up?

Dennis Jones

…you go to Walmart and get a “Games & Music” card… this comes with a little usb converter that lets you download the “Colors” program from the internet and also allows you to upload your pictures back onto the internet…

Mr. Moleskine

January 8, 2008

MoleMole1

My brother Doug gave me a sketchbook for Christmas and not just any sketchbook, mind you… a MOLESKINE watercolor sketchbook… the legendary notebook of Hemingway, Picasso and Chatwin. With names like that attached to this elegant little journals history, it’s a pretty intimidating thing to try to put a picture into it. (I don’t know who the Chatwin fellow is, but I’m sure he is very intimidating, too). Last night, thanks in large part to the current television writers strike, I found myself in my studio and decided to go for it. The Moleskine… legendary notebook of Hemingway, Picasso, and now, BrotherJones.

The Comments

Don Jones

Den, you have successfully conquered the intimidating “first page”… nice. I have yet to get my watercolors to perform like this. Did you leave page out of my tutorial?

Jason Bourne

Swanky, by far… Nothing like a good sketch book.

Doug Jones

Off to a great start, there! I wonder just how many moles have to be skinned to make one sketchbook?

Dennis Jones

…it’s a hairier surface than I’m used to working on, but I’m getting used to it…

Don Jones

It doesn’t look as though Brother Jones will be “going green” … we aren’t even concerned about the little moles.

Dennis Jones

…I tried painting on them while they were still alive but that didn’t work so good…

Doug Jones

I have been looking for a Weaselskine sketchbook but haven’t been able to find one…

Dennis Jones

…Doug, just so you know what you’re looking for, this is what a Weaselskine looks like, the legendary notebook of underachievers, slackers, and procrastinators…

Don Jones

nice hide.

Jason Bourne

That would make a great shirt.

Doug Jones

On second thought… maybe a sketchbook with feathers….

Dennis Jones

…with all this outdoors talk you need to check out ESPNOUTDOORS today…

Don Jones

Wow! That’s nice coverage… $1 billion in deer damage and a direct link to DennisJonez.com.

Dennis Jones

…ya gotta look fast, won’t be on the front page fer long…

Roballoo

Looks nice. What size is that MOLESKINE? It looks big if those are 1” squares on the cutting board? The first sketch is always the hardest isn’t it.

Roballoo

I wonder if Bro. Dennis got any extra hits on his ol’ web site with the link from ESPNOutdoors.com?

Dennis Jones

…those pages are 8.25 X 5 …which seems to be a great size for the little portrait studies I’ve been doing in it…

LooseyGoosey Thursday

January 10, 2008

LGThursday

Wow! I almost forgot it was LooseyGoosey Thursday until I sawDoug had a new sketch up for it. I’m putting up a couple more pictures out of my Moleskine Sketchbook. I hope Brother Don hasn’t forgotten about this…

The Comments

Don Jones

How could I forget it when I didn’t even know it? I much prefer the Theologikal Thursday slant. It appears you are going to burn right through that new sketch book Den. Pace yourself man. You’re a PACER… act like one.

Dennis Jones

…hey, ya gotta burn thru a sketchbook before you get tired of it and start wanting a new different one …otherwise it will end up on a shelf with all the other unfinished sketchbooks you own…

Don Jones

Yes, indeed. I just had a thirty minute power nap. I’m good for another thirty minutes!

Doug Jones

had to umplug my computer this afternoon cuz of a giant red blob on the weather radar that showed lightning and TORNADIC activity right in my front yard! Now that I am back on.. I see I have almost missed out on loosey goosey Thursday… drat….

Dennis Jones

…well Doug, there’s always next weeks Loosey Goosey Thursday… see what happens when none of us will make a decision… we wind up with Loosey Goosey Thursday for a name instead of something more intelligent sounding like Thuper Art Thursday… when will we ever learn?

Mike

Greetings! This is one of my daily stops for fun and exciting things to see! I have what might be a strange question…maybe. What sort of color palette are you using for these paintings? I really dig the colors and all. I use the Moleskin sketchbooks but haven’t tried the watercolor sketchbook yet. I think the art store will really like me this weekend. Thanks again for sharing.

Dennis Jones

Hi Mike… since it is December and I live in Northeastern Indiana and it’s really cold and windy up here, I’m inside my nice warm house and using the same palette of gouache paints that I use on everything else… you can find the complete list of colors I use HERE. Basically white, orange, and burnt sienna for the flesh tones and black, burnt umber and maybe a little blue for the rest… I know, I know, you’re not supposed to use black because it will kill the color in your painting… but… I’m in a hurry to get to these done before I lose interest…

Don Jones

I got half way through your comment Den and my eyes gave out…

Process

January 11, 2008

MoPencils

…pencil…

Mole1

…watercolor sketchbook…

MoFinishs

…digital paint…

I thought it might be interesting to show the process on these particular pictures. I scratched out the pencil drawings sometime in November and they have been laying on my studio floor since that time. I got a new watercolor sketchbook at Christmas and used those pencil sketches to get that project started. When I have a little spare time at night I sometimes will digital paint with Photoshop and that’s how the last images came to be.

The Comments

Doug Jones

it’s always fun to see the transition from sketchbook to blog.

Dennis Jones

…the transition from the floor to the trash can, too…

Don Jones

And let’s not forget the transition of trash can to neighbor’s back forty. These are super… are you using the Wacom or the mouse… or both?

Dennis Jones

…Wacom Tablet… the mouse has retired…

Doug Jones

did the mouse get a gold watch and an AARP membership?

Don Jones

Speaking of AARP I received yet another card in the mail last week. I wised up and put this one in my wallet to flash around for those snior discounts.

Dennis Jones

…just got back from getting a yellow fever shot… I don’t know what I’ll do if one of those other colors tries to get me… just make a run for it I guess…

Don Jones

A yeller ocher shot? You must either be getting ready for a foreign mission trip or Nick’s wedding.

Ryan

When you say you got a watercolor sketchbook, I take it that’s a traditional 2D medium and not digital? What water color sketch book do you use?

The Comments

Doug Jones

cool! this is the first one you have made that changes colors!

Don Jones

YOu can’t help but smile when you look at this. Den, I believe your home confinement serves you well in the creative dept.

Jason Bourne

Thats awesome. I think he has more teeth than me, and hair.

Doug Jones

did you make this during the playoffs? You were probably distracted while making this and not sending out those positive vibes to Peyton… and see what happened?…

Don Jones

Den, When I got to see your creations in person, what surprised me was how SOLID you build ‘em. No soft and squeeziness here rock hard. I like that.

Roballoo

Are these for sale? Have you tried selling them on Etsy the eBay of handmade goods? Wondering how big is this guy?

Doug Jones

I think Dennis has gone fishing…

Don Jones

I bet he is putting his yellow ochre shot to the test.

Doug Jones

yep… fishing in foreign lands, over seas, across the big puddle…

Jason Bourne

Hope he finds Loch Ness. Hehe…

Roballoo

Nessie – perhaps his next creation.

mmm Dessert!

January 24, 2008

Sahara

I could have sworn my wife said we were going out to get dessert because I followed her right on out the door, but apparently she said we were going to the desert because we just got back from a week in the Sahara. It was a pretty hot place and oddly enough was covered with sand! I successfully avoided all alligator and hippo attacks and changed a flat tire while out in the middle of nowhere.

The Comments

Don Jones

I bet you’re in some sort of weather related shock… from sand to snow. Don’t they have any camel rides or anything over there?

Doug Jones

ho chee mama! I’m making a note to myself right now… “don’t go out for dessert with Dennis”

Jason Bourne

You can always have sanwiches…

Socmo 2008

January 28, 2008

Socmo3D

My brother Doug may own the original, 1950’s retro-look Socmo, but I just got the brand new 2008 upgraded version…

The Comments

Doug Jones

FANTASTIC! I like how you got the flappy ears right. Did you make this while you were waiting in that French airport?

Jason Bourne

Outragously swanky!!!

Roballoo8

Way cool. I’m liking this cross pollination. Bro. Don is doing illustrations, Bro. Dennis is doing SocMo. what will Bro. Doug do next?

Don Jones

Roballoo, at Brother Jones we are continually trying to keep our 3 visitors on their toes.

Doug Jones

We have THREE visitors? since when?…

Don Jones

Since Mom quit reading our blog material.

Dennis Jones

…when we got home we discovered our refrigerator had quit working… what a mess to try to clean up… the only bright spot is… we got BRAND NEW FOOD! …hooHOO!

Doug Jones

it’s spooky how appliances always know when you are out of town…

Don Jones

Fresh food is always a plus. Nothing beats fresh Huntington Cheetos.

Roballoo

You have me concerned. I’m thinking of leaving my camcorder on when I am out just to see what my fridge is up to.

TV Alert!

January 30, 2008

Mole2

Here are a couple of pictures from my Moleskine sketchbook. They are inspired by the tv show Lost. John Locke and the mysterious island monster which no one has ever seen. I’m pretty sure this is what the mysterious island monster looks like, even though I’ve never actually seen the mysterious island monster. Tonight Lost kicks off with last seasons finale, (I think) and tomorrow the season opener! …hooHOO!

The Comments

Doug Jones

Locke looks almost pleasant here… that could be a bad sign. I think you got the monster right… just add a lot of gnats… Finally something on TV I want to watch. I hope the new season does not have anyone named Hillary or Obama in it… I’m really getting tired of hearing those names… Hey… why doesn’t Jack Bauer run for president? He’s not doing anything these days…

Don Jones

Locke looks fresh and ready for the upcoming season. Beautiful renditions that get me hyped for the big show Den. I believe you and I are closer to the Locke hair-do than Douger.

Roballoo

If I haven’t been keeping up on the show would I be…Lost?

Jason Bourne

I can’t wait for the new Star Wars animated TV show.

Doug Jones

That flash forward on Lost is a real DOWNER! Wish they hadn’t done that…

Don Jones

Same here. I can’t wrap my mind around present, future jumpin’ around stuff. Give it to me STRAIGHT in an unadulterated sequential time sequence. I prefer to NOT THINK when I enjoy t.v.
