Hugo

Hugo

I’m sure gonna miss that little hobbit…

The Comments

Dennis Jones

Happy Birthday, Donzle! I dropped something in the mail for you yesterday… I sent the same thing to Doug for his birthday… I have one, too… we will soon be able to make an official Brother Jones toast together on the internet…

Doug Jones

that Hugo is a mighty fine HORSE player…

Dennis Jones

…kinda nuts, though…

Don Jones

He does do a mean cannonball.

Jon Slone

You know, i don’t watch LOST but come on! This 500 pound guy’s been stuck on an island for 3 years? Is this a Krispy Cream island? What’s this cat been eatin’?! Everyone else should be dead by now cause obviously what ever crumb of comestible that’s been unearthed……This dude has found’em all!

Dennis, I don’t know if you remember me. Back in 2002 we emailed a bunch. I sent you some of my work and you said you liked it alot. You gave me lots of advice. Then another time we emailed using only Chicago song titles. Most recent I was the one who emailed about scanning and you put it on your blog. Well, as you may have forgotten, I write and illustrate books and the like. And have been trying to get published for 10 years. Well………..It finally happened!!! My first book will drop nation wide this march!! I’m so excited, words fail me. See…………………………………………………………See how they failed me. In closing, my favorite NFL team is the COLTS and I deplore the Patriots! Talk about your nonsequitor! Hiskid, JON

Dennis Jones

…hey, that’s great Jon! …tell me about your new book…

Jon Slone

Well, as you may or may not know, without name recognition you still have to compromise a little more than you would like. My favorite format for a book is like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” That book size, look and picture on every page format. That’s how the rest of mine will look. This first book however will be more of a book of short stories and poems. It’s called “Riggleberry Bloke” And other Silly Whatknots. My greatest influences are The good Dr. Shel Silverstein, Roald Dahl, and The Looney tunes. You told me your influence was Mad magazine. Another cool thing is I am freed up to promote this thing sun up to sun down. I plan on touring as much as possible. Can you open any doors up your way? Maybe your church? I’ll bring my gourd collection

What A Super Bowl!

February 4, 2008

Harpooner

OK, that had to be like the best Super Bowl I’ve see… ever! An undefeated team, DEFEATED in the championship game! The underdog team making a last minute drive at the end to win! Wow!

The Comments

Doug Jones

OH NOooo… I thought the game was NEXT week!

Doug Jones

Them goggles make me think this may be a steampunk bear… right?

Dennis Jones

…Doug, I am now a huge fan of steampunk thanks to you …I always liked that “look”, but never new it had a name…

Jason Bourne

Cool gun. Congrats Giants, that was a great Super Bowl. You earned that trophy and know how to play.

Don Jones

I yelled loud on that big corner pass connection between Eli and Plex. Slung Whoppers all over the basement… This illustration has MOXY. Nice.

Dennis Jones

…I added the Giants logo today before I posted this picture in honor of their fabulous win…

Doug Jones

What are the odds that two brothers would win back-to-back Super Bowls? Dennis… you win the Super Bowl next year and then we will see if Don can win it the next… OK?

Dennis Jones

…you’re talking about the big, all you can eat, Super Chili Bowl, right?

Don Jones

The logo in the background is so timely. The Manning brothers are in the record books … the Jones brothers simply have a record. Den, how is that parole deal going?

Jon Slone

Thank God the giants won!! With as much dislike that God gives a person, I’ve placed all mine on the Snobby patriots!!! Long live Manning-Mania! Terry Kath signing out

Dennis Jones

…I’m pretty sure Terry Kath signed out a couple of years ago…

Jason Bourne

First Peyton and now Eli. That is just cool, back to back.

Dragon Sketch

February 6, 2008

MiscDragon

This was a quick color study I did last night. I put a bunch of miscellaneous color on this picture and then used the color picker to select the different hues and work them up from dark to light. In the process I got some interesting color variations on the dragon.

The Comments

Doug Jones

WOW… I almost followed that! You seem to have lots of time for fun stuff… we were busy dodging tornadios… yes, I said tornadios…

Dan Lietha

Thanks for sharing the many studies and sketches with your web audience. It’s my “coffee” each morning before I hit the drawing board. Is it possible to take it up a few notches (a triple espresso in this case) and record a video podcast that walks us through your sketches as they are produced. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about:
http://bluhmdigitalpodcast.blogspot.com/
Check out the last example given, which is the Tom Cruise caricature. Great stuff! Just think of the inspiration you could give your audience by letting them WATCH and LISTEN to you draw and paint. I’d even BUY a DVD of such a thing! So what do ya say, Dennis? Can you make a dream come true? 🙂

Jason Bourne

That is one cool dragon!  The eyes are “eye catching”.

Dennis Jones

…hey Dan… that Joe Bluhm is one fabulous artist… unfortunately, I’m not tech savvy enough to know how to make a video for the internet…

Dan Lietha

Let there be Tech-savvyness!

How – http://danidraws.com/2007/05/25/record-your-art/

What – http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/

You have the Who, When, Where, and Why. 🙂

Dennis Jones

…hmmm… well, I sent an email to our web master, Keegan, and asked him if video was possible for Brother Jones… I’ll let ya know what I find out…

Doug Jones

Dan… thanks for that link to Joe’s podcast. His work is incredible! Ho chee mama! None of us are very tech-savvy. I only recenly discovered that I can video something with my digital camera and put it on YouTube. Den… if you can’t put video on this page you can always put a link to YouTube. ‘scuse me now, I have to go borrow some fire from the guy two caves down from me….

Dennis Jones

…YouTube??? HooCheeMAMAwhat’s that?

Doug Jones

Den… I think your Photoshop painting skills are coming along real good now…

Tiger Sketch

February 7, 2008

Tiger

Another hour color sketch out of Photoshop. We see here my embarrassing attempt to lay down a quick background for the tiger. I’m just not all that interested in backgrounds, but I suppose I need to pay a bit more attention to them if I’m ever going to try to do an actual job with this medium.

The Comments

Don Jones

You’re using a “medium”? Maybe that’s what I need… I need to try and “channel” some inspiration from some dead artist or something.

Dennis Jones

…I repent… no more mediums… I’ll try to do it on my own from now on…

Jason Bourne

Thats grrrreat. Tony the tiger would be jealous of those stripes.

Painting From My Sketchbook

February 8, 2008

ProcessA1ProcessA2ProcessA3

The pictures I have been posting for the last couple of days are straight out of the sketchbook I carry around with me. I thought you might like to see the original page these characters came from.

The Comments

Dan Lietha

You thought correctly! I LIKE!

Don Jones

Dennis, You are this week’s recipient of the Brother Jones “Pretty Good Posts” award for your daily delivery of fresh, exciting, visual content.

(I’ll check my trash for a prize to send you.) Congratulations!

Jason Bourne

Congrats. Love the sketches. Subtle yet bold. Its a great day.

Dennis Jones

…hooHOO …the “Pretty Good Posts” Award! …I’ve been trying to win this for 3 years now!

Roballoo

Thanks for showing these original sketches. I like seeing this glimpse into your creative process The tiger reminds me of John Tesh for some reason.

Steampunked Scripture

February 12, 2008

SteampunkedScriptureSteampunkedScripture2

The job request I’m working on right now is for a creative Bible books poster. They said I could do anything I wanted but “no characters”. NO CHARACTERS? Jeepers, the only thing I know how to do is characters, now what? Well, the latest thing I’m interested in is the “steampunk” genre, so this is what I came up with. It was kind of fun painting grunge for a change and I liked the way the scratched letters turned out…

The Comments

Don Jones

I can visualize you working this up with a pair of goggles on and steam engine gloves. SteamPunk IS Brother Jones!

Doug Jones

cool… it’s not as fun to draw things without eyeballs… but this is looking real guud, Clark!

Dennis Jones

…Jeepers, Doug, thanks for introducing me to the steampunk movement, and Don, I’ve got my fingers crossed hoping I get a snazzy new set of steampunk goggles for my birthday because I’m pretty sure a Cintiq tablet is outa the question…

Dennis Jones

…my crummy old set of steampunk goggles…

2006_03_30_DenToughGuy

Doug Jones

You need some like James Gurney is wearing here…

Don Jones

If we could only find some goggles that had a 150+ prescription in them… my current pair of readin’ glasses have no ear pieces on them. They broke off… now they’re very 1880ish.

Doug Jones

is it time for you to take your eyeballs in to be resurfaced and rotated, Don?

Dennis Jones

…I’m thinkin’ maybe if I can just find a nice pair of goggles I can just duct tape some reading lens onto them… would still be a pretty good look…

Dennis Jones

Don Jones

I nominate you as “SteamPunk Jones Brother of the Month!” Those are beeyouutiful.

Doug Jones

you got the punk look down… now let’s work on the steam…

Dennis Jones

Don Jones

Atomic SteamPunk Xtra-Grande!

Doug Jones

This needs to be the new BrotherJones Logo! AWESOME!

Dennis Jones

Jason Bourne

“Super Nova Steem Punk”. KABLAM!

Doug Jones

so… are Don and I just figments of your steampunked imagination???

Dennis Jones

…Brother Jones has the same story line as the TV show LOST… no one is sure who or what is real and who or what is not… or if it’s all just a figment of someone’s imagination…

Don Jones

I think I’ve been shot… or contracted some strange virus from the island.

Doug Jones

Look out for that swarm of buggy things, Don…

vanessa

I’ve got “your” bible for children in french. And it’s wonderful !!! I hope to see more books of you in France and Belgium !!!

Derby

February 18, 2008

Derby

Another picture out of my sketchbook. I hit the wall trying to color it, didn’t know exactly how to pull it all together, got frustrated with the whole process and started piddling around with the background just for grins. I then raised the white flag and surrendered.

The Comments

Don Jones

It appears you are becoming the master of the scratch and funkadelic grunge technique. Nothing like giving a little human touch to those cold, hard, square pixels. Nice … this guy is sort of creepy for some reason. Monkeysque. Two words utilizing “que”. Very unique.

Jason Bourne

He looks like a bad guy that would be in the Rocketeer movie. Nice…

Doug Jones

I see from the notes that this guy likes robots and has a mighty wind… maybe that’s why he has no friends…

Searching For A Brush

February 19, 2008

RetroPage

I’m trying to get up to speed as quickly as possible with the Photoshop painting deal, so I’m doing a lot of little color studies like this from my sketchbook. Right now I am mainly trying to find a brush that can be my “go to” workhorse tool. Unfortunately, I still haven’t figured out what that brush is.

The Comments

Don Jones

No doubt a SteamPunk veteran from the sleepy little 1880’s town of Reeds Spring.

Jason Bourne

Wow…That is awesome. Looks like a space pilot going to the far reaches of the Binary Galaxy…

Dennis Jones

…Reeds Spring certainly was in a galaxy far far away…

Doug Jones

Reeds Spring had these advanced weapons that would shoot/spit chewing tobacco juice at you… I think they called them “children” Whatever brushes you are using seem to be working pretty good. Of course I have extremely low standards and all…..

Don Jones

Reeds Spring is now just a distant blur as you face the western sky. Highway 160 now completely by-passes the town.

Otto

…In a galaxy fa far away a pilot of taxi-space… look like a taxi driver from space… great

Dennis Jones

…attention NickJonesEverbody… tell Grant to immediately start work on a space story for me about an intergalactic taxi cab driver stationed in an out of the way little place in the universe called Reeds Spring who’s fighting the good fight against tobacco firing baby robots…

Jason Bourne

Yes. And we need snub fighters of all shapes and sizes. The Rebel Galactic Organization may be able to aid us.

Otto

lets start to fight…. red baro out….

Loading Sketchbook Pages

February 20, 2008

RetroBoy2

I have stumbled onto something that is really working for me. I have always been one to snatch ten minutes at lunch or thirty minutes at the end of my work day or the wasted time I spend in front of the TV at night to make something, build something or draw something.

I’ve been doing a lot of digital painting lately on this “borrowed” time. Since I am mainly just trying to get my digital painting chops down, I don’t want to waste a lot of time coming up with an idea to paint, drawing that idea out and then finally painting… by the time I do all that other stuff I am either out of time or have lost interest. When I want to paint, I want to paint NOW… so this is what I’ve done.

I loaded a bunch of pages from my sketchbook onto my computer. Now when I have a bit of time to paint I snag one of those pages, crop out one of the pictures and begin painting immediately. It’s not like I’ve discovered anything new, it’s just that this efficient little process is really working for me. It’s also fun to see images that are hidden in my sketchbooks take on life when they are fleshed out with color.

The Comments

Terry Elliott

Hey Dennis, I’m new to digital painting. Heck, I’ve actually skipped over the real painting part all together. Anyway, in Photoshop, do you have a lot of layers going on—as opposed to just a few or none? Love your style and just thought I’d ask. Thanks!

Doug Jones

hey, I really like the look of that helmet… with the underpainting color peeking out. Looks like we may be getting close to seeing a Denney Tutorial on PS painting, right?

Otto Meza

It’s nice. Are you using a Wacom tablet?

Jason Bourne

Man thats groovy. Space pilot ready to take on the aliens…

Dennis Jones

…Otto, yes, I use a Wacom 6X8 Intuos tablet…

…Terry, I just recently (last week) came to the realization that if I could just get this computer painting thing down I could probably do better work faster than I can with traditional media… so at this point I dont really have a set game plan figured out for how to attack a painting… in fact, I seem to forget the things that work right after I do them…

…Yesterday I was piddling around with the flow and opacity settings on my brush, and suddenly nothing was working right anymore so I was going to reset the brush to where it was before when it was kinda working for me but I couldn’t remember what those settings were…

…So anyway, (to answer your question) I’m working on several layers, but I’m trying to pear things down to a more simple approach… and, Doug, if I get something down that kinda works for me every time I’ll post up a tutorial on it…

Terry Elliott

Thanks for the quick response, Dennis. I know exactly what you mean about changing this opacity and that method and so on and so on. Then, just when you think you’ve hit a good stride, you forget how you got there. I’ve got it down to one layer for the face, one for the hair, one for the eyes, and one for the background. I think. Anyway, looking forward to the tutorial!

Don Jones

I am forecasting a down turn in the qouche market.

Otto Meza

we will appreciate a tutorial or maybe tutorial boock….

Doug Jones

yes, yes… a boock….

Doug Jones

with chapters and verses… so we can quote you! :0)

Dennis Jones

…yes I can see it now …something similar in style to the KJV (King James Version)…
…we’ll call it the DJV (Dennis Jones Version)…

Jason Bourne

Build a theme park next…

Doug Jones

…and thou shalt use the number 12 brush. And it’s opacity setting shall be 30%… not 35% nor 25%… nay, it shall be 30% only. And this shall be a lasting setting for you and you family for generations to come.    1Dennis 3:16

Flesh Tones

February 22, 2008

Baldy

Here’s a quick Photoshop attempt to find a color to do skin tones with… it’s looking like orange is the big winner… for now…

The Comments

Otto Meza

Hi dennis good morning here in El Salvador i have a question How many time you xpend just to paint this draw? (time to make a Sketch not include)

Dennis Jones

…Otto, most of the digital art I post here is just experimental stuff that I do as I try to figure out how to paint with Photoshop. so it is very quick and unfinished work… I might have fiddled around with the color on this for 10 minutes or so…

Nick Jones Everybody

phhh… 10 whole minutes… I could do this on a nintendo DS in 5.

Otto Meza

mamma mia, you are a master

Don Jones

Master Brother Jones Bonsai!

Roballoo

I don’t think I want to know how his head got detached from his body. i guess I’d be kinda lngry looking if that happened to me too.

Roballoo

lngry in Roballoo speak is angry.
