Happy Valentines Day!

105Batman

In the afternoons I’ve been listening to Huntington’s Very Own, AM 1300, WBZQ. It is our hometown, 500 watt (19 watts at night) blow torch oldies station. Their slug line is, “we play the songs the other stations just won’t play”. Yesterday they played Disco Duck. Attention WBZQ… there might be a reason the other stations aren’t playing these songs anymore.

I’m diggin’ your illustrations and grunged backgrounds combination platters.

Jason Bourne

Talk about perfect teeth. Bats fall in love with Catwoman?

Doug Jones

dentists could use this on a postcard to remind folks of their check ups. are those scratches in the background something you found somewhere or made?

Dennis Jones

…thats a photoshop brush Nick gave me years ago… when all else fails (and it usually does) go for the grunge look…

Terry Elliott

Dennis, I’m not one to complain, but simply putting hearts on the background doesn’t make this Valentine’s Day worthy. I was thinking the mouth could be re-worked to form the shape of a heart. It kinda does already. Thanks.—A concerned citizen

Dennis Jones

…ok, ok, you caught me… this was just a little 20 minute effort and I wanted to try out a new vector brush I found on the internet so I used it on the background and much to my surprise it had hearts on it but rather than spend another second on this picture I entitled it Happy Valentines Day in order to explain the hearts… I do like that heart shaped mouth idea, though…

Dennis Jones

Terry Elliott

Perfect! Can’t wait to see what you come up with for Arbor Day!

Jason Bourne

Wow, that is awesome and funny!

Dennis Jones

HAPPY SAINT PATRICKS DAY!

Terry Elliott

Let me know when you start taking requests!

roballoo

Don’t let the real Batman see this – he just might do the same thing to your teeth.

Jason Bourne

LOL. Some days I fell like that.

Don Jones

I fall like that everyday.

mark behm

Hee hee. He’s great.

Jason Bourne

Oh man, I meant to write “feel” and wrote “fell”. And Don, that was just funny when I read your post, I needed this laugh.

Don Livermore

Dennis, I sent the email to you yesterday through your website, not this one. I just sent one on this site with my email address on it. Give me and shout and I’ll get back to you. See ya, Don

Dennis Jones

…done and done!

Don Livermore

Got it and sent a long email back to you. See ya, Don

Don Livermore

Happy Valentines Day? Hey, that reminds me of the guy that had chipmunks eat his car wiring.. That was weird! Don’t remember for sure who that was.. Your insurance paid to repair that didn’t it Dennis? ehehehhe. Don

Dennis Jones

…wow …I had forgotten all about that …we lived out in the middle of the woods and had no garage to park the car in… rodents decided to nest under the hood and chewed all the wiring out of our car… turns out, cars don’t work so good with no wiring… who’da thot?

Don Livermore

Dennis, I emailed you the Keegan Jones new owner of “Wheat State Pizza” in Springfield, MO article. Since you’ve not heard anything about it…it must not be “THE” Keegan Jones but the article is in your “in-box”…Don

New England Video Scandal

April 4, 2008

105RedSox

I don’t claim to be much of a baseball fan, but I think it is just outrageous that the Red Sox illegally videotaped the St. Louis Rams workout before they played each other in the Super Bowl a few years back… that just ain’t right.

The Comments

Don Jones

The Royals are undefeated this season (3-0). The world is coming to an end.

Doug Jones

i think he stripped his gears rounding third…

Jason Bourne

Kool cleats…and shading! I think I see the Target logo.

All Cintiqed Up

April 8, 2008

105Portrait105Sketchbook

The Fed Ex guy delivered a Cintiq to me on Saturday and then backed out of the driveway and into my soaked yard leaving monster tire ruts. WHO CARES, I’ve got a brand new Cintiq! I’ll fix those tire tracks later… maybe in August.

What a great piece of equipment this is. Just a tiny learning curve to get the feel and then it’s off to the races. I’m thinking it must be like driving a Ferrari. I can drive a car, a Ferrari is a car, but it’s a real different kinda car. In other words, I was all over the road with it at first, but I’m quickly getting the hang of it and could not not happier about making the plunge into Cintiq Land.

The Comments

Dan Lietha

HEY! Congrads on the Cintiq! I’m happy for you and jealous of you all at the same time. I’ve been Jones-ing for a Cintiq for a while. PLEASE give us a full review (even a series would be great!) of what you have and the likes and dislikes you discover using it. Does it save time? Does it really make it possible to draw on your computer as you’d like to be able to draw? Inquiring artist minds want to know. Your blog could put me over the top to get one.

Doug Jones

ooooo…. a new toy! fun! That’s a cool basketball texture on the material… is that a brush?

Dennis Jones

…Dan …as far as I’m concerned, the Cintiq is everything it’s cracked up to be… there was always a disconnect for me when I blindly used a tablet while looking somewhere else at a computer screen… a lot of guess work in that… maybe I’m in the right spot, maybe not… it’s a whole lot easier when your picture is right below your stylus… a more traditional feel to it… I’ll try to comment on this a little more this week if you like…

…Doug, yes, that is a brush I found while digging around on the internets… I think it will be a useful one… I like the texture it produces…

Dennis Jones

…Doug, I was going to email that brush to you but it’s in a set somewhere and I will have to find it, separate it out, save it as an individual brush, yadda yadda yadda… all that to say… I didn’t email you the brush… but I woulda…

Don Jones

Congratulashunz on the new digital drawin’ canvas. I see many fast, cranked, beaootiful, masterpieces in your future.

Jason Bourne

Nice indeed. Indeed… Live and learn from the best.

Doug Jones

you probably don’t have the address to where you found the brushes do you? Hey… I have a ton of experience with a Cintiq. If you want to send yours down to me I will be happy to break it in for you. The breaking in period is very critical and I have done it dozens of times….

Don Jones

Speaking of breaking in … I mowed for the first time yesterday. Nothing appeared to break.

Dan Lietha

Which Cintiq did you buy? 21 inch? 20 inch? 12 inch? Gotta know, gotta know!

Dennis Jones

…hokay …I got the widescreen 20WSX which I think is only available in the US right now… since I’ve totally flipped over to doing all my color on the computer, I didn’t want to get the smallest one just to save a little money and then be wishing I’d bit the bullet and got a bigger one since I work on it every day…

…the screen seems huge to me… I find myself working down in the lower left hand corner a lot… well that sounded kinda weird… Photoshop is my default working program and with the widescreen I have all the palettes I work with open and on both sides of the screen and still have miles of room…

Dan Lietha

That’s funny. I guess it would seem HUGE to someone that’s been painting on a small video game screen. 🙂 Also, very good info to know. THANKS!

Dennis Jones

…a Floyd Norman cartoon…

roballoo

Your digital painting skills have come a long way in a very short amount of time. The Cintiq is only going to help. I’m very impressed. I’d like to see pics of it in action – in the wilds of your studio.

CardShark

I was digging in my computer looking for a file and ran across this picture that I never got around to posting. I think I was planning to go back and put a few finishing touches to it, but I really don’t see that ever happening… so… I now officially pronounce this… DONE!

The Comments

Don Jones

Nice. For some reason, I instantly thought of the old t.v. show The Wild, Wild West. That show was the LOST of its time.

Jason Bourne

I think of Back to the Future 3. A great time period. Yeehaww!

Doug Jones

I think of Ben Dover… master saloon pianist…

Dennis Jones

…wasn’t he related to Willie Maykit in some way?

jon Himknotme Slone

Great bullet belt!

Here’s a bunch of pictures of alligators… or maybe they’re crocodiles… I’m not really sure which. I doubt that it’s a very accurate portrayal of either one…

The Comments

Don Jones

Love those bubbles… tasteful.

Jason Bourne

Very colorful and makes me want to go swimming…

Doug Jones

hmmm…. I was the first to post here this morning… but now my comment is gone and repalced by brother Don’s! What gives? … internet gremlins at work here?

Don Jones

You probably forgot to hit the SUBMIT button, Dooglous.

Doug Jones

SUBMIT button? …. we don’t need no stinkin’ SUBMIT buttons!

Richard Carver

Very sweet Dennis. Maybe “sweet” isn’t the right word but I like ‘em. rc

Doug Jones

I like them bubbles! Do you have a magic bubble brush… or how did you make them?

Dennis Jones

…I have a magic bubble brush… it is in the Wacom 3 set of brushes…

roballoo

So is it safe to assume that all images henceforth shall be digital in their final execution?

Star Wars On Spike TV

April 14, 2008

Nuknoga

Last weekend Spike TV played episodes I, II, and III of Stars Wars on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. This weekend they did the same thing with episodes IV, V, and VI. Lucas seemed to have the whole story pretty much mapped out when he did the original (episode 4) back in the 70’s. In my humble opinion, the original was the best of the bunch followed by it’s sequel… and then they got progressively worse even though the special effects got better. I love the character development that went into this project and I still enjoy drawing some of the obscure oddballs from this series.

The Comments

Jason Bourne

Im a Star Wars fan and enjoyed the prequels.{except for Jar-Jar} I really liked Watto, he is cool. There is going to be a new CG  Star Wars movie coming in August!

Doug Jones

That hammerhead character in the cantina is still one of my all time favorites. …nice color gradation on the mouth area.

jon Himknotme Slone

I agree. The best 2 were 1977 and 1980. Star wars and Empire strikes! No question!!!

April 15th… the day I send all my money away to the IRS. I remember back in my college days when I worked at Silver Dollar City. One of the artists there always made his income tax check payable to the INFERNAL Revenue Service. He said they didn’t have a problem with that because they always seemed to cash the check. Still brings a smile to my face…

The Comments

Doug Jones

cool critter… but once again I am interested in your background. Looks kind of splotchy like real media… is this a PS brush?

Dennis Jones

…yep… a PS Brush…

Doug Jones

You got that Tom Lynch splatter thing going with that brush. Which reminds me…. ol’ Tom is coming to Nashville for some watercolor workshops. Come on down and we can go have a visit and eat some carrots with him…

Jason Bourne

Greatness! All the bumps give make it interesting. I guess that is what I would look like if I worked in the IRS for a few months…

Don Jones

Infernal… that is funny. I heard on the radio that the average tax return is around $2,400. Obviously, I am way below average with a $0 return and looking to borrow cash for my hefty IRS debt. He ain’t heavy… he’s my debt laden brother….

Dennis Jones

…Tom Lynch, eh? …I’m still pretty bitter about losing to him in the little one on one basketball game we had during a lunch hour… I may have to show up and challenge him to a little one on one hockey game… I believe a firm cross check in his back should settle the score for me just fine…

Doug Jones

yeah… he wiped the floor with you. He IS from Chicago you know… he might have some hockey moves himself…

Dennis Jones

…hmm …I’ll be sure to check into his hockey abilities before I officially challenge him to anything…

I mailed all the money I had to the IRS yesterday. Today I seek to find comfort in the words of noted theologian Doris Day, “kay surra, surra, whatever will be will be…” I’m sure the government can spend my money much more wisely than I ever could. Big spending congressmen, this weezers for you. Enjoy!

The Comments

Jason Bourne

Nice… I guess the dog got all his Kibbles’n Bits back from the IRS.

Doug Jones

does Weezer work nights at the bowling alley?

Don Jones

The Weez look is one in which I find on my face quite often… wide eyed and bloated.

The Comments

Doug Jones

… and you can get anywhere in 15 minutes if you drive fast enough. a little NC Wyeth influence here?

Dennis Jones

…absolutely …of course, my picture is totally different than Wyeth’s because my guy is facing in a different direction, dontcha know…

mark behm

Cool! Also love that surface you got under his feet.

Jason Bourne

Ah the 1700s. Nice greenage.

I’ll Have A Shake, Please

April 18, 2008

BukBucaneer1

Karen flew out to the west coast yesterday, so I’m here at home alone. At 5:35 this morning, someone grabbed hold of my bed and started shaking it back and forth violently. It woke me up, I looked to see who it was, nobody was in the room and the bed continued to shake.

It is a somewhat disturbing thing to wake up from a deep sleep and discover that you are riding a bucking bed in an empty room.

I immediately reached the rational conclusion that the bed was possessed… or the house was possessed… or the house was being repossessed by the mortgage company. Space aliens perhaps trying to scoop me up in their tractor beam? The second coming… was I having trouble getting off the ground?

Nope, it was an earthquake… a 5.4 earthquake somewhere to the east of us. Go figure, my wife is in California enjoying nice weather and I’m here in Indiana riding out an earthquake.

The Comments

Doug Jones

I think it was a shifting of the time zone plates in Indiana. You are so messed up with your time zones. I hope no sock creatures were injured in the shake up…

Doug Jones

oh… the transition to digital painting looks complete to me!

Dennis Jones

…I have been hoping to transition from Padawan Learner to Jedi Digital Knight, but am not sure how strong the force is with me yet…

Dennis Jones

…11:15 Eastern time… we just had another shake… this is getting interesting…

Dennis Jones

…a 4.2 on the aftershock…

Doug Jones

put some chocolate in a glass of milk, set it on the counter and wait a while….

Jason Bourne

ARRR…matey! Shake and bake!

Don Jones

Enjoy those tremors and stabilize everything that is important to you. That would be your coffee pot, your new digital tablet, and the beloved Sears Craftsmen mower.

roballoo

Well, if there’s one thing I don’t mind outsourcing from California it’s our earthquakes!

Dennis Jones

…uhm, a little Brother Jones Helpful Hint for everybody… when your wife is out of town and you go to the grocery store to buy yourself something fun and exotic to eat, don’t get the Kroger battered minced fish… definitely not the wisest move you can make… the “minced” in the title should be your first clue that this is a questionable item at best…

Don Jones

I think minced means “blenderized” and then shaped back into fish patties.

Dennis Jones

…it kinda had huge mystery chunks in it… not the smooth, blenderized texture I was hoping for…

Doug Jones

it’s hard to beat a Hebrew National Hot Dog…

Jason Bourne

I love burgers, fries and the famous chacolate malt….yummmy.

Dennis Jones

SERENITY NOW
