Back From Oklahoma

September 9, 2008

3CrazyKid2

I just got back from Oklahoma. My youngest son’s appendix burst and he was in dire straights there for a while, but he’s all better now. Since I’ve never had any sort of “real” job, I was able to stay and help nurse him back to health.

Because I’ve been out of the studio for a couple of weeks, I have no experimental art to show here, so I’m going to post this piece of art I did recently and hope I don’t get in trouble with the art director I did it for. (I don’t think he reads this blog anyway).

It’s good to have the NFL season going again. If you’re a football fan you no doubt heard or saw that Tom Brady is out for the season. Bernard Pollard, (the Kansas City Chief who hit Brady’s knee), is from FORT WAYNE, INDIANA. Another Hoosier hits the big time.

The Comments

Doug Jones

hey, glad you made it back home OK. So did the Hoosier get a bonus for taking out Brady? Interesting the way you grayed down the outer elements on this illo.

Don Jones

Hey, the Chiefs at least made the Pats sweat it out until the final seconds. Looks like Brody is out for a while as well… bring on the Hurad/Bowe connection.

Don Jones

On a side note, I’m scratching two items off my bucket list… 1. Participate in a Jury Pool. 2. Serve on a jury.

Jason Bourne

Glad all is well.  Go Cowboys and Colts!

Dennis Jones

…I thought for sure the art director on this piece would complain bitterly about me posting it before it was published, but I guess not…

Dennis Jones

…Douger, wanna know how I grayed down the outside of this?? By using the COLORIZE technique I lernt about on your web page…

Bernard

Welcome back…hope the boy is back to 100% soon too. With the NFL’s easiest schedule ( I looked it up ) the Pats will still cruize into the playoffs…however, if the Steelers ( the NFL’s toughest schedule ) can find a way to build a brick wall around Ben I would love to see them knock off the Pats! After, we beat the colts of course…sorry.

Dennis Jones

…here’s a little something that seems to be floating around the Kansas City area… seems Steelers old coach Bill Cower has been flying in and outa that place quite a lot lately… some people say this might be the last year for GM Carl Peterson and Coach Herm Edwards… Cower coached with Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City way back when… he might be headed back there… just tossing that into the rumor mill, and after all, isn’t that what the internet is for anyway? …wild speculation and unverified hearsay…

Don Jones

I saw Bill C. at the local Price Cutter and asked if he was headed back to K.C. He replied, “Which aisle are the chips on?”

Jason Bourne

I was thinking what if the Jets end up playing against Green Bay in the Super Bowl.  That would be so ironic.

Doug Jones

I need some Geritol… I have ironic poor blood…

Bernard

…whoa! Wouldn’t Bill in KC be a scoop! You just know he has to come back…they can never retire! Ali said he wouldn’t drag it on…but he did. They just can’t leave. Of course Jim Brown did. Great rumor mill stuff form the Jones Mill. Oh, I almost forgot to fulfill my commentor’s pledge of oath…Great Artwork Denn!

Doug Jones

Wow… that must be one of those ETERNAL flames Don has on his porch…. it’s STIIL going, and going, and going….

Don Jones

I apologize for that photo… I’ve been sitting in a Jury Box for the past few days and have not been able to switch it out… I forgot the URL to the Brother Jones Master Controls.

Doug Jones

hang ‘em high…

Dennis Jones

…I didn’t know you were on the O.J. Simpson jury… why am I always the last to know these things?

Roballoo!

Interesting…the parents seem to have no legs! Also, is it just me or are your limbs getting spindly-er and spindly-er over the years? The grayed down outer bits really serve to highlight the baby and then your eye is drawn over to the parent’s expressions. Nice visual trick.

Hybrids

September 15, 2008

ReadWithMeCover08

Sometime last summer while experimenting with what exactly I wanted to do with the new digital medium I’m now immersed in, I did several “hybrid” pieces of art. They were half traditional, half digital. This one has the color blocked in with gouache, and then it is finished out digitally on the Cintiq.

The Comments

Zaz

Good Morning DJ, For my own education, what part of this piece was done with the Cintiq? The old Dennis style, real clean looking. It was good to see your Colts pull it out yesterday in the second half you’ve got to be some what pleased.

Jason Bourne

Tubular. Nice texture on the tree an it looks like you can feel it.

Don Jones

Fantastic. You were hybrid before hybrid was cool.

Bernard

This is the great use of color and subject art style that first got me looking for you back around ‘93-’95 I think you were born to create this kind of art. Makes me want to go and get my first Concordia, Simon “The First Christmas ” book out again! Just love this work.

Doug Jones

awesomness dittos…

Dennis Jones

…man, it’s been a typical Monday for me… and quarterly tax day to boot… arrghh… hey, how ‘bout dem Chiefs? …can anybody say new Chiefs coach Bill Cower? Doug, your Titans are leading the Colts in the division… for now… Zaz, I punched up the color and added the highlights n stuff… actually, I can’t really remember what I did… I’m still in a love/hate relationship with painting on the computer… sometimes it all works and it’s great, and other times I want to throw all this gear out the window and apply for the greeter job down at Walmarts…

Doug Jones

It’s funny… the paper here said the 2-0 start for the Titans is the first time they have had a 2-0 start since 1999… when they went to the Super Bowl… Looks like we’re going again this year… right? … right?

Dennis Jones

…if it said that in a newspaper it must be true… Congratulations!

Bernard

New Chiefs Coach, Bill Cower.

Jason Bourne

What a game it was last night! Thats what football is all about!

Don Jones

Keegan was sitting in the end zone… I called him after the Felix JONES kick-off TD return.

Dennis Jones

…Keegan couldn’t have picked a better game to go to…

Don Jones

It even sounded fantastic on AM Radio.

Dennis Jones

…wha? ..were you and your family all huddled around the gigantic old tube radio in your living room, sitting in rocking chairs, knitting and listening to the scratchy radio play by play, or what? …good night, John boy…

Don Jones

Janz and I were driving back from the Fun Acre Miniature Golf Course and Spa in Springfield listening in the Hummer. (Hummer of a heap Honda)

Bernard

Dear Jones Boys, you know how I hate to go off topic but this is a business proposition ( and a whole lot faster than email )! Would y’all consider renting me your gnarly pencil art-piece ( from the brotherjones.com homepage ) to use on a blog I’m building? It wouldn’t be prominently displayed as is yours but used as a teeny-tiny category/comment post icon(s) for the site? …you would be able to visit, raid and discredit me whenever you felt like it? c’mon whaddya say? LMK, BernardFromTheYard

Don Jones

Do hear about the cannibals that ate a missionary… They got a taste of religion.

Dennis Jones

…I’m not sure if Don was speaking in the King’s English on that last comment or if he was impersonating Yoda again… Bernard, send me an email…

Dom Philibert

Awesome!!!!!! love your color scheme.

Dennis Jones

…WOW, Dominic I’m your new biggest fan! …your artwork is amazing…

Bernard

WOW…is right! Great Stuff Dom…Denn, it’s okay, my adreneline has fizzled and I’ve gone to Philly so see if there are any chewed up, broken pencils left at Lincoln field to model my new blog icons after. Talk about a “Sacl-Attack”.

My Garage Door

September 22, 2008

GarageFlower1GarageFlower2

Malcom, (the “chaos theory” guy) from the Jurassic Park movie said, ”…life will find a way”. That seems to be the situation taking place in front of my garage door right now.

The Comments

Dan Lietha

MAN! I’ve been trying for years to get a flower to grow in front of my garage and it just never takes. What is your secret? Any special plant food? What kind of flower is it? What direction does your garage face? Do you limit opening your garage door? And do you credit your Cintiq in your success in growing this flower in any way? 🙂

Don Jones

You must be using the new and improved Concrete Miracle Grow. I say, get on the Craftsman mower and show that rebel type flowery sort who’s boss.

Jason Bourne

That is quite amazing! Who knew concrete would work so well?

Dennis Jones

…Dan, all I can say is, flowers didn’t grow in the concrete at my house BEFORE I got a Cintiq… so… you can do the math for yourself… seems pretty obvious to me…

…Don, no need to show the flower who’s boss… Karen apparently did not think this was quite as unique as I did because all traces of the flower are now gone… glad I snapped a picture of it before it was too late! …flower killer!

Doug Jones

interesting… not long ago I was watching Batman Begins on TV. At one point Alfred is talking to Bruce and says… “Took quite a fall, didn’t we, Master Bruce? And why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” I thought hey… that’s good! I gotta remember that. I find it interesting that the deep philosophical insights that the Brothers Jones have come from Dinosaur movies and Batman…

Roballoo!

Who would win in a fight: Batman or Dinosaurs?

Don Jones

Maybe Karen has it pressed flat as a memento inside some photo book. Maybe not…

Jason Bourne

Bats would win. He would just use his “Bat-Dino Repelant”.

Ray J. Johnson

Did you paint that arrow on your garage door for this photo? Nice clean tape job.

Dennis Jones

…yes, yes I did… and my wife wasn’t so happy about that, either…

Roballoo!

maybe if the arrow matched the house color more she would go for it. I would try that.

Jason Bourne

Do I see the Knight Rider mower? Does it talk and everything? LOL.

Don Jones

You can’t tug on Superman’s cape… You can’t spit in the wind… You can’t pull the mask off the ol’ Lone Ranger… And you don’t mess around with Den.

Doug Jones

I think that flower has lived longer on this page than it did in real life!

Don Jones

Dennis must be blogstipated.

Zaz

I see everyone has a lot of time on there hands…OK boys, Time to grab the round up and move on. Dennis, paint your garage door and make Karen happy again, and lets get back to the wonderful world of Jones Brothers Art…we miss you man!

Dennis Jones

…man. I am just swamped with work right now… if I get a break, I’ll dig around and try to find something new to put up here…

Zaz

Not to worry, it’s a good thing to be busy it means you’re needed…No pressure Dennis and remember, the big guy only give us so much that we can handle. God Bless dude, and have a make it a great weekend.

Master Gardener

September 29, 2008

Yapples1Yapples2

Yes, I am a master gardener. A few years ago, Karen and I bought two apple trees at Walmart and it was my responsibility to get them planted. There were instructions for planting attached that included a diagram for reference, so I figured it couldn’t be all that hard.

Step one was to dig a really big hole, which I did. Step two was to put the tree into the really big hole and fill with mulch. It seemed to me that there should probably be a little dirt around those roots, but I figured the people that wrote the instructions probably knew more about tree planting than me, so I put the trees in the holes, dumped in ten bags of mulch, watered it all real good… job finished!

That was ten years ago. Turns out I was supposed to fill those holes with dirt first and then put the mulch on top to retain the moisture. My apple trees are planted in pure mulch. No dirt to be found anywhere close to the roots of my apple trees. Maybe that’s why they blow out of the ground every time a storm kicks up. They do, however, produce apples… lots and lots of apples. I am currently eating apples… and apple muffins… and apple cake… and anything else Karen can think up to put apples into…

The Comments

Doug Jones

This must be the year for apples. Our old apple tree had so many apples on it, a large limb was hanging down and touching the ground. I have eaten a lot of apple cake recently too…

Don Jones

I always got a kick out of the “Planting Instructions for Morons” PLANT GREEN SIDE UP. Two trees? You’ve got an ORCHARD!!!

Jason Bourne

You’re a prime Johnny Appleseed. Nice work. I might plant some watermelon seeds one day….

Doug Jones

so… are you watching so much football these days that you don’t have time for art works?

Doug Jones

so… are you watching so much football these days that you don’t have time for art works?

Doug Jones

oops… delete that last comment… I must have hiccupped… how do you spell hick up?

Bernard

Hey we are staying on topic with the pics pretty much here today…imagine that! Steelers v.s. Ravens?

Dennis Jones

…since we are staying on topic, Ravens are hard on apple trees… so I say Steelers…

Otto Meza

and produce apple computer too?

Jon Slone

Hey Dennis, Do they make tracers for pieces of paper bigger than notebook size? Like one for possibly an 11X14 size?

Dennis Jones

…Jon, I’m not sure what you mean by “tracers”…

wobblyhalo

To fix the trees, just pour two yards of cement around the base of the trees, they will remain quite stable in the wind. Then go down to wally world and buy a can of “Grassy Green” spray paint and vowalla, beutiffuull ceement. Just watch the the mowing.
