USA Today

Cower

…from the newspaper, to my watercolor sketchbook…

Some people enjoy going outside into nature to become inspired to create art. My experience with that has been that nature is full of biting bugs and is frequently very hot. I have found it much more enjoyable to be inspired from inside the comfort of my own house, in a climate controlled environment, sipping a favorite beverage, and looking at my USA Today.

The Comments

Don Jones

I too was reading the old USA Today… today and realized that the NFL has an interchangeable game deal going in the latter part of the 2006 season. Apparently NBC can pick and choose a few of the games they broadcast on Sunday evening. I was disappointed to see that the NFL channel is getting into game broadcasts. In fact, the Chiefs play on Thanksgiving night ON CABLE. Dennis… reserve my seat now in your living room. Karen… weigh up some snacks for the game. Thanks.

Doug Jones

needs more scowl… This guy has the best scowl in the NFL

Don Jones

I would have to DISAGREE there with you Douger… I believe Jon Gruden has the ultimate scowl goin’ on. Coach Cowher has the best JAWLINE in the NFL. I would like some additional comments from others on this heated little debate.

Dennis Jones

…when Marty Schottenheimer coached the Browns he had to decide whether to keep Bill Cowher as a linebacker or Sam Mills… he kept Cowher… Mills went on to become a pro-bowler for New Orleans… Cowher went on to coach with Marty… Schottenheimer said he traded the best player, but kept the best coach…

Don Jones

That’s good info there Den. But where exactly does Marty fit into the picture? Seems Lamar gave him the boot from the Chiefs… and he couldn’t quite cut it with the Redskins. He may be the best TRAVELED coach in the league.

Jeff

It’s still Hockey season ‘aint” it? Try Ty Domi he has an all star mug..

Dennis Jones

…Hey… I think you’re right… since the NHL moved from ESPN to OLN I never see it anymore… I kinda forgot they were even still playing… it’s probably almost time for the playoffs, isn’t it?…

Jeff

Not for the STARS….ha!

Dennis Jones

…are you still a Rangers fan? …they are having a surprisingly good season this year…

Jeff

I am on a self imposed black out.. N.H.L. players had no problem leaving the fans hanging for a season so I am leaving them for a season. I am sure they will survive the financial blow I have dealt them..But the sting from my action will last at least a day or two.. “evil laugh”

Dennis Jones

…I’m with you, Jeff… now that there are two of us on self-imposed NHL blackouts, I doubt whether the NHL will be able to recover as quickly from the crushing financial blow we have dealt them together… SOLIDARITY…

Jeff

I tried the hate mail thing but when you start with “you guys stink” they usually don’t respond..

bernardfromtheyard

Dennis & Jeff, Make that 2.5 of us on the NHL blackout list. I say .5 because with Sid the Kid in pittsburgh I’m entitled to at least his games. Besides my son would kill me if I didn’t follow his new favorite player. As for Cower, sorry Don, but it’s a triple threat…Jawline, Spitter and Scowl.

Aviator Sketch

September 10, 2007

Aviatorhead

My home state NFL football Colts won this week. So did Doug’s home state football Titans. Don… looks like a long year for you and your home state football Chefs… I mean Chiefs. At least they had a really good HBO special this year.

The Comments

Jason Bourne

Great moustashe. My team, the Cowboys won last night also… And no one was chasing me (whew).

Don Jones

I was fortunate enough to see the Chiefs HBO show while I was in Indianapolis. Apparently, that was the high point for the season. I am sorry to report that I watched the FedEx Cup golf tourney and only switched to the Chief’s game on commercial breaks. It was more than I wanted to see of Coach Herm’s foncused football project.

Doug Jones

What are you sayin’… has the football season already started?

Don Jones

My prediction for the Chiefs… it’s already come and gone.

Dennis Jones

…well, I’d say the Chiefs will be at least as good as Cleveland this year…

Doug Jones

I enjoyed watching that old #4 cheesehead out there on the field. I find myself rooting for the old guys more and more…. dunno why…

Don Jones

I think the CHiefs will have their hands full with the dreaded Oakland Raidaaazzz. San Diego on the other hand… yeow. Tough.

Dennis Jones

…in that Green Bay game… did you see the Eagles fan in the crowd that had a big square chunk of aluminum foil on his head labeled Philadelphia Cream Cheese?

Doug Jones

missed seeing that…. dang!

Don Jones

I just heard someone say the Chiefs need to get Bill Cower back… Great idear.

Dennis Jones

…I say get Jerry Clower instead… remember that guy?

Don Jones

“Shoot up here amongst us!! One of us just has’ta get some relief!!!”

Doug Jones

Woo… knock him out, John!

New Photoshop Brush

October 1, 2007

BillyCower

I was piddling around on the computer this weekend and decided to learn how to build a custom Photoshop brush. I was very proud of myself for learning how to do this… then a little less proud when I discovered how easy it was… then not too proud at all when I forgot to save it and threw it away accidentally… but I did paint this little picture with it before it disappeared forever.

I’ll never forget that little Photoshop brush… it was a true and loyal friend… while it survived…

The Comments

Don Jones

I never got to try that little Photoshop brush, but I bet it was a good little work horse. Coach Cower needs to trade his NBC desk job for a Chiefs sideline gig. Phlegm win big this week even with the LIONS defense.

Doug Jones

I keep thinking I need to try to make a PS brush… but just never get around to figuring it out. But if YOU can do it… there is hope for all of us

Don Jones

Do you bang your mouse back and forth on the desk like Bob Ross cleaning his brush?

Dennis Jones

…well, that made me laugh out loud…

Don Jones

I still enjoy a good Bob Ross paintin’ show. Especially when he loads up that fan brush with a touch of blue and lots of magic white and proceeds to create a wonderful little waterfall in his world.

Doug Jones

Yeah… that made me laugh too… in my world… all the happy little trees are deformed. They still play Bob’s program here. Love the Afro. You might want to check out the Bob Ross Cult

Don Jones

Dennis Jones

…well, since it’s apparently Bob Ross Day on my page, a little something from the archives…

Don Jones

A true, best of Brother Jones ArKival Klassic.

Jason Bourne

Bob Ross paints mice? Who knew? Incase you’re reading Bob, would you paint Bespin or Kamino. It would be awesome.

Andy

No mistakes here, just happy accidents. Words of wisdom from Bob Ross and my mom…

Dennis Jones

…my mom never thought my accidents were all that happy when I was a kid… of course, my accidents usually involved a broken or severed limb or two…

Andy

I thought it was unwavering motherly encouragement until I was in a therapy session around age 23… when I realized she was referring to me. Maybe I’ve shared too much.

kelly

hello. I have been checking in off and on for the past coupla years. Big fan of you all. Dennis, I had an interesting thing happen while reading the “See with Me Bible” with my daughter last night…a few weeks ago she learned about Jonah, she’s almost 4, while she relayed the story from Sunday school, she kept referring to Jonah as “She” – I then explained to her that Jonah was a boy. She got very agitated and explained to me that Boys don’t wear yellow dresses with purple. I later saw in the story book the class used that he indeed had a yellow robe and purple sandals and sash…back to last night, as I read the story I was surprised to see, even in the Dennis Jones version Jonah sports yellow and purple, luckily there was no questions of whether he was a boy or girl, I plan to research today to see if Jonah’s choice of wardrobe is mentioned in the Bible…just thought it as interesting.

Dennis Jones

Hi Kelly …I don’t think there’s anything about what color robe Jonah wears in the Bible… probably most everyone was wearing some shade of brown in those days, (except for the very wealthy)… of course, a full color Bible full of brown is not all that exciting… in a picture Bible with tons of different characters, you have to make them look different in some way, so you put one in yellow and call him Jonah… you put one in green and call him Peter… I was just using color to differentiate different characters… it was fun to hear the story about you daughter…

Doug Jones

I personally think Jonah wore a robe with polka dots…

Dennis Jones

…I’m pretty sure his robe was kinda polka-dotted after being half digested by Big Fish gastric juices…

Roballoo

Your P-shop paintin’ skils r da bomb. Love that treatment of the area under the brim of the hat –

Dennis Jones

Roballoo

Yikes!

Back From Oklahoma

September 9, 2008

3CrazyKid2

I just got back from Oklahoma. My youngest son’s appendix burst and he was in dire straights there for a while, but he’s all better now. Since I’ve never had any sort of “real” job, I was able to stay and help nurse him back to health.

Because I’ve been out of the studio for a couple of weeks, I have no experimental art to show here, so I’m going to post this piece of art I did recently and hope I don’t get in trouble with the art director I did it for. (I don’t think he reads this blog anyway).

It’s good to have the NFL season going again. If you’re a football fan you no doubt heard or saw that Tom Brady is out for the season. Bernard Pollard, (the Kansas City Chief who hit Brady’s knee), is from FORT WAYNE, INDIANA. Another Hoosier hits the big time.

The Comments

Doug Jones

hey, glad you made it back home OK. So did the Hoosier get a bonus for taking out Brady? Interesting the way you grayed down the outer elements on this illo.

Don Jones

Hey, the Chiefs at least made the Pats sweat it out until the final seconds. Looks like Brody is out for a while as well… bring on the Hurad/Bowe connection.

Don Jones

On a side note, I’m scratching two items off my bucket list… 1. Participate in a Jury Pool. 2. Serve on a jury.

Jason Bourne

Glad all is well.  Go Cowboys and Colts!

Dennis Jones

…I thought for sure the art director on this piece would complain bitterly about me posting it before it was published, but I guess not…

Dennis Jones

…Douger, wanna know how I grayed down the outside of this?? By using the COLORIZE technique I lernt about on your web page…

Bernard

Welcome back…hope the boy is back to 100% soon too. With the NFL’s easiest schedule ( I looked it up ) the Pats will still cruize into the playoffs…however, if the Steelers ( the NFL’s toughest schedule ) can find a way to build a brick wall around Ben I would love to see them knock off the Pats! After, we beat the colts of course…sorry.

Dennis Jones

…here’s a little something that seems to be floating around the Kansas City area… seems Steelers old coach Bill Cower has been flying in and outa that place quite a lot lately… some people say this might be the last year for GM Carl Peterson and Coach Herm Edwards… Cower coached with Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City way back when… he might be headed back there… just tossing that into the rumor mill, and after all, isn’t that what the internet is for anyway? …wild speculation and unverified hearsay…

Don Jones

I saw Bill C. at the local Price Cutter and asked if he was headed back to K.C. He replied, “Which aisle are the chips on?”

Jason Bourne

I was thinking what if the Jets end up playing against Green Bay in the Super Bowl.  That would be so ironic.

Doug Jones

I need some Geritol… I have ironic poor blood…

Bernard

…whoa! Wouldn’t Bill in KC be a scoop! You just know he has to come back…they can never retire! Ali said he wouldn’t drag it on…but he did. They just can’t leave. Of course Jim Brown did. Great rumor mill stuff form the Jones Mill. Oh, I almost forgot to fulfill my commentor’s pledge of oath…Great Artwork Denn!

Doug Jones

Wow… that must be one of those ETERNAL flames Don has on his porch…. it’s STIIL going, and going, and going….

Don Jones

I apologize for that photo… I’ve been sitting in a Jury Box for the past few days and have not been able to switch it out… I forgot the URL to the Brother Jones Master Controls.

Doug Jones

hang ‘em high…

Dennis Jones

…I didn’t know you were on the O.J. Simpson jury… why am I always the last to know these things?

Roballoo!

Interesting…the parents seem to have no legs! Also, is it just me or are your limbs getting spindly-er and spindly-er over the years? The grayed down outer bits really serve to highlight the baby and then your eye is drawn over to the parent’s expressions. Nice visual trick.

Hybrids

September 15, 2008

ReadWithMeCover08

Sometime last summer while experimenting with what exactly I wanted to do with the new digital medium I’m now immersed in, I did several “hybrid” pieces of art. They were half traditional, half digital. This one has the color blocked in with gouache, and then it is finished out digitally on the Cintiq.

The Comments

Zaz

Good Morning DJ, For my own education, what part of this piece was done with the Cintiq? The old Dennis style, real clean looking. It was good to see your Colts pull it out yesterday in the second half you’ve got to be some what pleased.

Jason Bourne

Tubular. Nice texture on the tree an it looks like you can feel it.

Don Jones

Fantastic. You were hybrid before hybrid was cool.

Bernard

This is the great use of color and subject art style that first got me looking for you back around ‘93-’95 I think you were born to create this kind of art. Makes me want to go and get my first Concordia, Simon “The First Christmas ” book out again! Just love this work.

Doug Jones

awesomness dittos…

Dennis Jones

…man, it’s been a typical Monday for me… and quarterly tax day to boot… arrghh… hey, how ‘bout dem Chiefs? …can anybody say new Chiefs coach Bill Cower? Doug, your Titans are leading the Colts in the division… for now… Zaz, I punched up the color and added the highlights n stuff… actually, I can’t really remember what I did… I’m still in a love/hate relationship with painting on the computer… sometimes it all works and it’s great, and other times I want to throw all this gear out the window and apply for the greeter job down at Walmarts…

Doug Jones

It’s funny… the paper here said the 2-0 start for the Titans is the first time they have had a 2-0 start since 1999… when they went to the Super Bowl… Looks like we’re going again this year… right? … right?

Dennis Jones

…if it said that in a newspaper it must be true… Congratulations!

Bernard

New Chiefs Coach, Bill Cower.

Jason Bourne

What a game it was last night! Thats what football is all about!

Don Jones

Keegan was sitting in the end zone… I called him after the Felix JONES kick-off TD return.

Dennis Jones

…Keegan couldn’t have picked a better game to go to…

Don Jones

It even sounded fantastic on AM Radio.

Dennis Jones

…wha? ..were you and your family all huddled around the gigantic old tube radio in your living room, sitting in rocking chairs, knitting and listening to the scratchy radio play by play, or what? …good night, John boy…

Don Jones

Janz and I were driving back from the Fun Acre Miniature Golf Course and Spa in Springfield listening in the Hummer. (Hummer of a heap Honda)

Bernard

Dear Jones Boys, you know how I hate to go off topic but this is a business proposition ( and a whole lot faster than email )! Would y’all consider renting me your gnarly pencil art-piece ( from the brotherjones.com homepage ) to use on a blog I’m building? It wouldn’t be prominently displayed as is yours but used as a teeny-tiny category/comment post icon(s) for the site? …you would be able to visit, raid and discredit me whenever you felt like it? c’mon whaddya say? LMK, BernardFromTheYard

Don Jones

Do hear about the cannibals that ate a missionary… They got a taste of religion.

Dennis Jones

…I’m not sure if Don was speaking in the King’s English on that last comment or if he was impersonating Yoda again… Bernard, send me an email…

Dom Philibert

Awesome!!!!!! love your color scheme.

Dennis Jones

…WOW, Dominic I’m your new biggest fan! …your artwork is amazing…

Bernard

WOW…is right! Great Stuff Dom…Denn, it’s okay, my adreneline has fizzled and I’ve gone to Philly so see if there are any chewed up, broken pencils left at Lincoln field to model my new blog icons after. Talk about a “Sacl-Attack”.
