…just a friendly game of hockey…

Only one undefeated team was left in our hockey league, the mighty Puckhogs, and we had to play them last Friday night.

It was a tight game and somewhere in the second period while changing lines the puck zipped by me as I came out for my shift. Two of our guys snagged it and headed for the net. I jumped in behind them as a trailer, a risky move for me because I am a defenseman, but it gave us a 3 on 1 break. Unfortunately, we did not bury the puck in the net, it popped out, the other team grabbed it and roared back towards our net.

This was not a good thing. I had gambled as a defenseman, it had not paid off, I was totally out of position, and now the other team was working a 3 on 1 on us. I sprinted all the way back to the other end of the rink, they took a shot (which our goalie kicked to the corner), I swerved and headed for the puck.

At this point I had just used every ounce of strength I had to get back and had no energy left to stop… so I stopped by slamming (really hard) into the boards in the corner. My crash into the boards was so loud that everyone watching in the rink went… oooohh. Unfortunately, a guy from the opposing team who had the puck at the time got caught between me and the boards and the ref gave me a two minute penalty for roughing. Oh, well.

When the game was over I was talking to a couple of guys I knew on the opposing team. They said they did not see the play, but when they heard the huge crash in the corner, they just looked at each other, shook their heads and said, ”…we know who that was.”

…and they were right!

By the way… we won the game 3 to 2. HOO HOO!

Man, that’s good stuff. Risks, board crashin’, out-of-control… sounds like your illustration style too! YOU”RE NUMBER ONE! YOU’RE NUMBER ONE!

Doug Jones

BAD refs! They should have given you a 5 minute penalty… then you could have rested more…

Cheran

Hoo Hoo? So does that mean that your name, “Water Maccasin Annihilation”, is bye owl? Congrats!

Dennis Jones

…that’s our dog, Moo, (in the picture) yucking it up with some stray cat…

Don Jones

This post made me do some scripture referencing… The verse from Proverbs makes this illustration that much better. Den, I bet you consider your opponent body-checks into the boards just friendly little induced wounds.

Dennis Jones

…absolutely, and I always try to apologize afterward just in case I hurt anyones feelings…

CatColor

…color…

I like to draw animals even though I don’t know exactly how their anatomy works… as evidenced by this cat…

I couldn’t really remember how a feline’s back legs worked so I made a set up. I may have inserted a few too many joints… who knows?

I suppose it’s a good thing I make a living as a cartoonist and not as a technical illustrator.

The Comments

Doug Jones

Cool kitty… must have eaten those meeces…

Don Jones

That kitty needs to go the d-caf route.

Dan Lietha

Love that cat! Now, if we can only get you to stop painting with your mouse.

Dennis Jones

…back to sticks n mud on this one…

Dan Lietha

I thought that was the case as the cat looks really sharp.

Dennis Jones

…I did use a mouse for the background on this, but its fur got all matted up with gouache and I had to switch back to a brush…

Jete Pones

…pencil……color……annoying…

Michael Bolton

I don’t know what that last guy was talking about. This picture rocks dude!

Dennis Jones

…so do you Michael, so do you…

Different Sketch Paper

May 31, 2007

MeowiSK

…new for 2007 …yellow!

We sometimes become slaves to the familiar. I’ve been using the same sketch paper (the Canson Biggie Pad) for years now. I ran out the other day, and since it’s a two hour round trip to the art store, I searched around the house for something I could use in a pinch.

I found some yellow paper that I’ve had in my closet for several years now and used it. It’s a heavier paper than the Canson and much slicker. The pencil slid over the smooth surface and it had a much better feel to it… and it’s yellow… which seems to be a really big plus to me… for what reason, I’m not really sure.

Anyway, now that I’ve gotten used to the yellow paper, I can’t imagine using anything else… because I have become so familiar with it… I don’t know what I will do when it runs out…

The Comments

Doug Jones

when it runs out, you may find some paper in your restroom… Nice kitty! I have been using laser paper for years to draw on for the very same reason… it is slicker and I like the way pencil works on it. Wonder if it comes in yellow?

Dennis Jones

…hey, I need some help… I have used a particular Prismacolor colored pencil ( deco-orange 1010 ) for years now and have just found out they discontinued making it… A YEAR AGO… I can’t find them anywhere… the next time you guys are in your local art store, could you check to see if they have any left?

MA.

Nice tonal effect of the yellow. But I prefer Strathmore 14×17 sketch pad for drawing. It never fails me doing pencils, inks, and light watercolours. I’m on sketchpad number 29 now. I’m just hoping that they never run out of it. Nice job Dennis!!

MA.

Also, if you can get it, (Denril) it’s like onion skin paper and no matter what lead you use on it. It’s dark enough for reproduction.

Dennis Jones

…my pencil drawings are very quick and rough because all I do with them is tape them to the bottom of a sheet of watercolor paper so that I can redraw the picture onto it with a light table, so most any paper will do for that…

…but I’ve been thinking lately about doing a more finished pencil drawing with a lot of tone in it, and then dropping color onto it in Photoshop to see what that looks like…

What island do cats come from? Meowi.

I posted this sketch a while back. Here is what the finished piece looks like.

The Comments

Don Jones

That is the cat’s meow. What’s going on in Romania this time of year?

Doug Jones

I betcha the internets don’t reach to Romania.

Roballoo

Nice how you captured the expression on his face in the sketch and carried it though to the final piece. The subtleties such as the surfer’s goatee and the difference in the reflections for each sunglass lense.

I made a square Photoshop brush that I’ve used on the last couple of things I’ve posted here and I’m really liking it. I think if I just tweak it up a bit more it could be a major player in my little arsenal of digital brushes.

The Comments

James

Dude, you are truly blessed. I like the highlights on the cats fur, done in pencil I think and his eye’s just pop a good use of color as always.  Huh…I don’t see Don or Doug’s comment yet, hmmm, I guess the cat got there tongues

Dennis Jones

…they’re scaredy cats…

James

Any chance in seeing in the future your batman done digitally. I love the way you did it by using Gouache…it would be interesting to see you with an arsenal of computerize brushes and great style with your background, what you’d come up with…maybe a joker instead, something your brothers can relate with 🙂

Don Jones

Yeooowwwww…. I am sorry to report that I failed to contribute to the box office SMASH Dark Knight this past weekend. I guess I will wait until it hits the RedBox at my local McDonald’s. Here kitty, kitty, kitty… Den, remember the time I was attacked by that crazy siamese cat at Aunt JoAnn’s house?

Bernard

Great Expression! The cat musta seen your socmo collection!

Jason Bourne

WOW. That is swanky. The eyes are really awesome looking.

Doug Jones

man… it’s only Monday and I am already gettin dissed on this page! I’m just wondering what that cat is afraid of…

Dennis Jones

…well, Doug… I believe this kitten just saw an eight-legged cat and it had never seen an octi-puss before so it kinda freaked him out…

…and, yes Don, I remember when Aunt JoAnns cats cornered you against the fireplace and mugged you… what a cat-astrphe that was…

…James, I’m liking the way you got the cat talk cranked up on this page yesterday… you can’t have enough cat talk I always say…

Doug Jones

Felix… Krazy… Sylvester… Garfield… a little more cat talk for you…..

Bernard

How ‘bout: “Rusty The Cat”

Dennis Jones

…don’t forget Morris… sorry, I’m being a copycat…

James

How about Kat-man-do…sorry it’s a West Coast thing.

Jason Bourne

I love Kit-Kat. Great stuff.

Dennis Jones

…it’s almost time for lunch… I’m thinkin’ catfish…

Bernard

LUNCHTIME! How about some Chinese…which would certainly explain the cat’s reaction.

Dennis Jones

…mmmm …Chinese …delicious …hey, what’s happened to Brother Don? …where is that fatcat?

roballoo

Some of that fur has a definite electric vibe to it. I dig it.
