GorrillaBed

…before Christmas… after Christmas…

Christmas can be a tough time of year for an illustrator. In an effort NOT to work through the entire holiday season, I work like a maniac BEFORE the season starts, take the break off, and then work frantically to catch up AFTERWARDS. Interesting things can happen to art trapped in this time period.

One of my clients needed a picture of a gorilla sleeping in a bed. The top picture is the rough I sent in for approval before Christmas. During the holidays I saw King Kong. (that pretty much killed an entire afternoon) After returning home, I began the finish on this spot, but there seemed to be something missing now. What was it? Oh… my gorilla needed a girlfriend like King Kong had. So I added a dolly for my monkey.

Thanks to the holiday break I was able to add a missing element to this illustration.

I think you’re on to something here, Den. You should go see a movie before you finish each picture! … but I think you should stay away from that cowboy movie… not that there’s anything wrong with that….

Don Jones

Kong makes this King look like a twin.

Dennis Jones

…that reminds me… did either of you guys see a movie called “Straight Story”… about a guy that rides his lawn mower cross country?

Doug Jones

yeah… it was a real slooooow movie… but I liked it!

Doug Jones

are you doing a lawnmower illo now?

Dennis Jones

…no… but if I were I bet I would be able to add the missing element to the illustration…

Don Jones

If I recall he was going to see his brother.

Dennis Jones

….yes… it is a really slow movie about brothers riding mowers that kinda makes you feel good at the end… this should be the official movie of the Brother Jones web site…

Doug Jones

It would be more fitting if it was about slow brothers constantly destroying thier mowers…. We could relate to that.

Doug Jones

By the way… that’s a

cow

MOOOOOooooo….

Doug Jones

great gorilla pic, there.

Don Jones

Speaking or repaired mowers ironically… I just picked up the Sears CRAPSMAN last Saturday.. a hundred bucks worth of new parts and some air in the tires… she’s ready for a spring rock mulching party in the front yard. Still needs a new battery.

Dennis Jones

…I have two Sears riding mowers at this time… the old one that is REALLY torn up… and the new one that is only KINDA torn up…

Don Jones

That is REALLY KINDA funny. As we have cussed and discussed before, SEARS does do house calls. You may need a second mortgage but at least you can get the grass mowed a few more times.

Dennis Jones

I’m getting pretty tired of mowing down 3 acres of cow pasture every weekend… the only thing that has saved me is my Bose Noise Reduction Headphones…

Don Jones

You may want to try the Texas/Oklahoma remedy for mowing… grass fires. Simply torch it every other month. Also, may I suggest you use diesel fuel instead of gas. (You’ll hold on to your eyebrows.)

Dennis Jones

…burning can be enjoyable… last spring instead of pulling up and hauling off the dried out vines in the gourd patch we just burned em all off… a fun time was had by all…

Doug Jones

While you are burning off those old gourd vines, don’t forget to get your long hot dog sticks and make some toasted marshmallows and cowfish…. you can make a saMOOre BWA Haaaaa Haaaa………..

Dennis Jones

…I could invite the neighbors over for some as I accidentally burn down our neighborhood…

Don Jones

Nothing more enjoyable than a hot, scorchin’ S’mor marshmallow stringing across your chin as you watch the remaining embers of your torched home glow in the setting sun.

Dennis Jones

…didn’t this happen in Dougs neighborhood recently… I seem to remember one of his posts on this subject…

Don Jones

I believe Doug got away with that little bit of arson fun. Just kidding Doug… We all know you are a true-blooded Boy Scout. Scout’s honor. (or did you drop out of that?)

Doug Jones

I have advanced to the next level of scouting involving a recliner and juggling various remotes at the same time. Very demanding…. but a necessary skill for these modern times

Dennis Jones

I have one remote control that is supposed to be the king of all the other remote controls so that I dont have to juggle various remote controls… but I cant figure out how the king remote control works… so I too am mastering the fine art of juggling remotes…

Don Jones

I too have all those remotes to deal with: The T.V. remote; the DVD remote; the Sound System remote; the VHS remote… there is a remote possibility that one day I will get these figured out.

Don Jones

Did you ever get the Nick Jones podcast to download? Keeg checked and said it should be working.

Nick Jones Everybody

I can’t get it to work either…

Don Jones

Download that bad boy from iTunes. That should work.

Doug Jones

That was a pretty exciting game yesterday… but I could have written a better ending… Is there sackcloth and ashes around your house today?

gary locke

i have a cub cadette that i will put up against any lawn tractor in the arena of “no way on earth that thing will mow a lawn” category. Broken muffler adds to the effect once started.

This weekend the 1933 version of King Kong with Fay Wray was on TV so I watched it. What a hoot! The claymation special effects are great and those close up shots of Kong’s face are priceless.

Don Jones

I checked my local listings and apparently King Kong was only on Kable. I can’t quite stomach watching the CHiefs anymore. What are we looking at up there in the illustration and inset? Blues first and then a colored rendition?

Doug Jones

Hey… how do you like the way our (Titans) field kicks up as you run on it. It’s like special effects.

Dennis Jones

1) …yes, King Kong was on the classic movie channel…
2) …and, yes, the Chiefs stink…
3) …I’m still just experimenting, trying to find my voice in the computer coloring world…
4) …yes, that is one fine, special effects field the Titans have… they always play Indie a good game…

Doug Jones

We came close… but no cigar.

Jason Bourne

Tubular! He would make a great Star Fox character. And I wish Pixar would make it into a movie.

Roballoo

Looks like it’s easy to add the colors when the image is only 112×146. I like the smiling determination on his face.

Doug Jones

I always liked the original KK. It was state of the art movie making at the time. It was the favorite movie of Bill Gaines, publisher of Mad magazine. For his birthday one year, the artists made a life-sized Kong head and put it outside his window (lookin in) in his NYC office. He loved it.

Dennis Jones

…oops …I was just looking at this picture and realized I forgot to put the other ear on this bear…
